Michael Ray Opens Up About Penny Tattoo

11/27/2018 — We all know that Michael Ray is a huge tattoo lover. He doesn’t try to hide it, and he shouldn’t. He will tell you anything you want to know about any of them and Taste of Country asked about one in particular after Michael Ray tweeted that he was getting a “new ink” while on the road...

“I brought my tattoo guy on the road with me this time,” Ray told Taste of Country, “because I never have time when I’m home.”

Michael Ray, being from Mount Dora, is a hometown boy to us. And his roots run deep in Mount Dora/Eustis Area. His family is still living there and there. We know his grandfather Amos was a huge influence on his life, music and aspirations. Taste of country asked about a penny tattoo that he had gotten with the number 1945 underneath it.

“When my grandfather passed away, I was up late doing his obituary and the slide show for his funeral. At about 3:00 in morning, there was this typical, this-cannot-get-any-worse moment. Everything was going wrong. I said to [my grandfather], ‘You’ve got to give me a sign.’ I looked down and saw a penny on the ground. My grandmother’s nickname was Penny, and she’s had it her whole life. I picked that penny up, and now anytime anything monumental happens, I find another penny.”

He isn’t even exaggerating... he has played the Grand Ole Opry 35 times, and he told Taste of Country he has a penny from every single time. “I’ve always found them randomly before I walk onstage.”

Wonder if he found one before meeting the love of his life, Carly Pearce? 😉
